Campfires are one of life’s little pleasures when out on the road! They bring together friends, family and strangers. Also providing warmth and fun. What is important not to forget is that campfires come with responsibility. Check out The Feel Good Family’s Top Ten Tips to prevent accidents and enjoy the perfect campfire experience.
Use a Firepit or Build a Fire Ring
Keep the fire contained by using a designated firepit or building a fire ring with rocks. Make it a fun activity and get the kids involved—they’ll love helping out and learn life skills along the way.
Keep Flammable Objects Away
Store items like lighters and fire starters in a canvas bag and keep spare firewood at a distance. This keeps all flammable objects away and reduces the risk of accidents.
Have Water Close By
Always keep a bucket of water nearby. While you may not need it, it’s better to know exactly where it is in case of an emergency.
Fully Extinguish Your Fire
When you’re done, make sure the fire is completely out. Water is your best friend for this—douse the fire thoroughly.
Keep Fire Blankets and Extinguishers Handy
Always have fire blankets and extinguishers in your caravan or camping gear, and make sure you know how to use them. They can be lifesavers in tricky situations.
Watch Out for Wind
Wind can easily spread sparks and embers. If it’s too windy, wait for the weather to calm down or avoid having a fire altogether.
NEVER Leave Fires Unattended
Always make sure someone skilled is keeping an eye on the fire. Leaving it unattended, even for a short time, can lead to dangerous situations.
Remember to Stop, Drop & Roll
Make sure to educate children on what to do if their clothes catch fire. Teaching them to “Stop, Drop, and Roll” could save their life.
Check Local Fire Restrictions
Before you light a fire, check for any fire restrictions in your area. Contact your local council, visit the CFS website, consult the Department for Environment and Water, or if you still aren’t sure, check with a local.
