Road Trip Ready? Safety Tips for Easter, ANZAC Day & School Holiday Trips

The Easter long weekend is one of the best times to hit the road and this year, ANZAC Day backs right onto the school holidays, giving plenty of you the chance to enjoy a longer break. Whether you’re packing up the caravan, camper trailer or motorhome, now’s the time to make sure you’re not just planning a great trip, but a safe one too.

With more vehicles on the road, regional travel increasing, and long distances to cover, a little preparation can make a big difference in keeping you and everyone else safe these holidays.

Do a Pre-Trip Safety Check

Before you leave, run through our Pre-Trip Checklist. It covers everything from tyre pressure and brake lights to mirrors, safety chains and gas bottles, so you can catch any issues before they become a problem on the road.

Make Sure Your Towing Setup is Spot On

Check that your vehicle and van are correctly matched, and that you’re within your towing weight limits (ATM, GVM and GCM). Your load should be evenly distributed and securely tied down. Don’t forget to check your brakes, lights, coupling and breakaway system.

Drive to the Conditions

You’re on holiday, there’s no rush. Take regular breaks, avoid driving when tired, and steer clear of dawn or dusk driving if you’re in an area with wildlife. Wet roads or windy conditions? Take it slow and keep extra distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

Pack Smart Before You Go

Keep heavier items low and close to the axle to maintain balance while towing. Make sure everything inside your van is properly secured as loose gear can shift while driving and become a hazard if you need to brake suddenly or take a sharp turn.

Be Seen, Be Safe

Check your lights, indicators and reflectors every time you set off. Make sure your number plate is clean and visible and switch your headlights on in low light or rainy conditions.

Be Courteous on the Road

If you’re towing and notice traffic building up behind you, use overtaking lanes or pull-over bays when it’s safe to let others pass. Stick to the left and keep the flow moving, it makes the trip more enjoyable for everyone.

Share the Load if You Can

If you’ve got a second driver who’s licensed and confident to tow, share the drive. It keeps both drivers fresh and makes the trip more enjoyable all round.

This time of year is perfect for exploring South Australia, camping under the stars, and spending quality time with your favourite people. A few quick checks now can save you from headaches later.

And don’t forget – our Think RV Road Safety hub is a valuable resource, packed with everything you need to travel safely. From towing tips to our Pre-Trip Checklist, it’s all there to help you feel confident and prepared before you hit the road.
