Limestone Coast Bucket List Destinations

If you need some inspiration to go caravanning and camping in South Australia, look no further. The Limestone Coast is a paradise for coastal lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. Take the stress out of planning, as Caravan and Camping SA have put together a Bucket List of Destinations you must visit when exploring the Limestone Coast.

Blue Lake, Mount Gambier

The iconic Blue Lake, located in Mount Gambier, is a breathtaking natural wonder formed within the crater of a dormant maar volcano. This lake is an attraction that draws visitors all year round, however, the best time to visit is in November. As the weather warms and the temperature of the water increases, the deep blue water turns to a stunning turquoise blue. This colour change is unique to this time of year and usually remains until late February. Stay a while and soak up the beauty with the 3.6km walking track that takes you around the lake. If you have extra time on your trip, you can also visit the Little Blue Lake for a refreshing dip.

Naracoorte Caves National Park

Visiting the Naracoorte Caves offers a unique opportunity to connect with Australia’s rich natural history. Located in Naracoorte Caves National Park, it is South Australia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site. On your visit here, you will be immersed in rich Australian history, dating back over 500,000 years. Take a guided or self-guided tour and investigate ancient fossils and prehistoric megafauna such as now-extinct giant wombat and kangaroo remains. For those caravanners and campers looking to stay nearby, park up at Naracoorte Caves Campground, where National Parks and Wildlife Services offer sites at an affordable rate.

Umpherston Sinkhole

Explore Umpherston Sinkhole, also known as the sunken garden. It is a jaw-dropping oasis formed from limestone corrosion when the top of the sinkhole fell inwards. Descending into the Umpherston sinkhole is like descending into an enchanting garden. You will be surrounded by lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and tranquil pathways. Disconnect from the world and take a stroll inside this natural wonder. Whether you’re just passing through, a devoted nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking something new, Umpherston Sinkhole is an unforgettable experience that should be on your bucket list when visiting the Limestone Coast

Kilsby Sinkhole

Dive into the deep end at Kilsby Sinkhole, a unique natural wonder that is not to be missed on your self-drive adventure through the Limestone Coast. Just 15 minute drive from Mount Gambier, and in the middle of a sheep farm, you will find Kilsby Sinkhole. Known for being one of the best snorkelling sites in Australia due to its crystal clear blue waters and magnificent underwater activity. Upon your visit, book in with the team at Kilsby Sinkhole as they offer a ‘no experience needed’ snorkel tour. But, if getting wet isn’t your thing, no worries – stay on dry land and enjoy a visit to the Kilsby Sinkhole Gin Distillery!

Coonawarra Wine Region

Discover the Coonawarra, a world-renowned wine region nestled in the Limestone Coast. Famous for its unique Terra Rossa soil over limestone, this area produces some of the finest bold red Cabernets in the world. As the weather warms, there’s no better time to stroll through the vineyards and soak up the sun with a glass of wine in hand. Enhance your experience by staying nearby at Coonawarra Bush Holiday Park, where you can enjoy the beauty of the region and have an extra glass (or two) while staying close to nature.

Robe

Robe has something for everyone, making it a popular destination for caravanners, campers, and 4WD enthusiasts alike. This picturesque coastal spot is close to Beachport and Southend, where you’ll find shops, restaurants, and a taste of leisurely local culture. One of Robe’s highlights is Long Beach – a 14km stretch of sand and sea. If you’ve got a 4WD, you can drive right onto the beach and enjoy front-row views of the Southern Ocean. Check out SA Parks or National Parks for nearby caravan and camping sites. Just be wary during holiday periods as sites fill up quickly!

If you’re looking to extend your adventure, discover the Southern Ocean Drive Road Trip itinerary – a coastal lover’s dream. This journey stretches from the Limestone Coast to the Fleurieu Peninsula and across the sea to Kangaroo Island. Travellers are immersed in endless opportunities to soak up dramatic coastal views, explore native Australian wildlife, and experience some of South Australia’s most captivating natural wonders.

Along you’re travels, you’ll stop by charming seaside towns, world-renowned wine regions, and breathtaking beaches voted the best in Australia. Keep your eyes peeled, and you may be able to spot local wildlife like sea lions, dolphins, and even koalas in their natural habitat. Feeling convinced?
