Leave No Trace

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” – Robert Swan.

Have you ever heard the saying, “Not all heroes wear capes”? It’s true. A hero can be anyone—especially wanderers who leave no trace.

To leave no trace means leaving nothing behind but your own footsteps. If every wanderer took just five minutes to leave their campsite as clean as they found it, we would significantly protect native animals, plants, and fragile ecosystems which keep this planet running. Leaving no trace not only preserves the beauty of the outdoors today but also ensures a sustainable future for caravan and camping tomorrow.

Imagine a world with no caravan or camping…hard pass thanks!

As much as we all dislike more responsibility (because seriously, as if we haven’t got enough already) actions really do start small with low effort. Here are a few tips to remember for your next road trip –

  1. Take all your rubbish with you – It sounds obvious, but small items are easy to forget. Keep a roll of bin bags in your car so you’re always prepared. In a worst case scenario, wheel bags or even a spare shopping bag will do the job until you can dispose of it properly.
  2. Choose established campsites – Camp on existing sites or durable ground to help protect plants and fragile ecosystems.
  3. Pack reusable items – Bring reusable plates, cups, and containers to reduce waste and avoid single-use plastics.
  4. Minimise campfire impact – If fires are permitted, use existing fire pits, only fallen wood and ensure they are completely extinguished before leaving.
  5. Respect wildlife – Enjoy animals from a distance and resist feeding them. Human food can harm wildlife and change their natural behaviours over time.
  6. Going off-road? Stick to the tracks – Driving off designated tracks damages landscapes and vegetation. Stay on the path and protect the environment for everyone.
  7. Low-impact cleaning products – When camping, opt for biodegradable soaps for dishes and personal hygiene, to ensure you do not contaminate water nearby or soil.
  8. Do a final campsite sweep – Before leaving, take five minutes to scan the entire area. You’ll often spot small bits of rubbish or gear you might have missed.

Positive change often starts with small actions – actions that sometimes challenge the classic “she’ll be right” mentality. But if we all rely on that mindset, there will come a time when things aren’t right anymore. Taking a little extra care today helps ensure these places remain just as we found them for our next adventure.
