Heading off this long weekend? Take some road safety tips

Wanderers, load. Your. Vehicles. The long weekend is almost here! Road trip those worries away and go explore what SA has to offer this weekend. Whether your caravaning, trekking off grid to go camping or doing a day trip, taking some handy tips with you for the road could make the difference between a trip that flops & livin’ like Barry!

First things first, buckle up!

• Towing a load? Maximise safety and control by ensuring both the towing vehicle and RV are level.Do not exceed maximum load limits advised by the vehicle manufacturer.
• Going off grid? Inform someone of your whereabouts & check in regularly if you are heading into remote areas with limited reception.
• Driving at night and need a rest? Consider parking in a well-lit location, such as a shopping centre carpark.
• Didn’t sleep well? Share the driving to avoid fatigue or pull over.
• Relax, this isn’t the Fast and Furious! Stick to designated routes, do the speed limit and be cautious of GPS shortcuts as they vary in road conditions.

Broken down? Don’t panic!

Pull over safely: position your vehicle as far from the road as possible.

Be seen: turn your hazard lights on.

Assess your surroundings:  

• Can’t exit your vehicle? move to the passenger seat if possible and keep your seatbelt on.
• If you can exit your vehicle, locate yourself away from the vehicle and behind a safety barrier if possible.
• If you need to change a flat tyre or check under the bonnet, be vigilant.
