Limestone Coast

Forged over 26 million years by the primal forces of the Southern Ocean and the movement of tectonic plates, the Limestone Coast is one of the most diverse regions in Australia. Rugged, wave beaten coastlines, clear blue waters and wild wind-swept beaches blend brilliantly with lush farming country, volcanic craters, caves, vistas of vineyards and never-ending pine forests.

Situated in the south eastern corner on South Australia, the Limestone Coast is perfectly located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne. Slow down and take some time to explore this intriguing ancient landscape. Whether you travel along the coast or inland through the heart of the region, the Limestone Coast is full of hidden gems beckoning to be discovered.

A labyrinth of caves, sinkholes, volcanic craters, national and conservation parks leaves outdoor enthusiasts spoilt for choice. While the coastal and inland waterways provide superb aquatic opportunities ranging from sailing to surf fishing.

For something a little more relaxed, spend a lazy day wandering the many galleries and discover the inspiration behind famous poets John Shaw Neilson and Adam Lindsay Gordon’s work. The region’s many boutiques, antique stores and craft shops also offer visitors the opportunity to unearth a unique treasure, while the many museums and historic buildings tell of the colourful stories that shaped the region.

A trip to the Limestone Coast is not complete without a visit to the Naracoorte World Heritage Fossil Site. Explore the many Limestone Caves and unearth Australia’s prehistoric past at the Wonambi Fossil Centre.

To satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst, indulge in the unforgettable tastes and aromas of the Limestone Coast. From the cellar door to the farm gate the region has reputation for crafting fresh regional produce rich in flavour and intensity. Cellar dooring is great way to sample the world renowned wines of the Coonawarra, Padthaway and Mount Benson wine regions, while the farmer’s markets allow you to stock up on the many home grown delights.

Blend this with an extensive calendar of vibrant events and a wide choice of caravan and camping options, and it is easy to find the perfect place for a Brilliant Break. Don’t be afraid to take a few detours along the way, after all that is what a great Australian road trip is all about. No matter which time of the year you choose to visit, you won't be left disappointed.
